Giant Palms & Lost Lakes
Distance: 14 km (Shortened version: 9.5 km focusing on the 4th and 3rd lakes). Elevation: 370m
Accommodation: Big Skies Gugs
The Experience: Start the day with a short transfer to the Hippo Pools, where the morning air is filled with the deep, primal grunts of resident hippo pods as they retreat into the water. We then hike through dense, emerald coastal forests and towering fern trees before joining the "Lost 4th Lake" trail.
Pause in the cathedral-like silence beneath the massive fronds of giant Raffia Palms at the Malangeni River—a sanctuary for the rare Palm-Nut Vulture, Pel’s Fishing Owl, and Narina Trogon. Previously used only by a few local fishermen, this newfound path follows the untouched and ecologically rich shores of Lake Amanzamnyama.
We then skirt the edges of the Great Kosi Third Lake, keeping a keen eye out for hippos, before arriving at our finish point for a refreshing drink. From here, a comfortable transfer returns you to the lodge, offering a final opportunity to unwind by the pool or enjoy a relaxing massage.
