Gugulesizwe Weather

In season, passing humpback whales can be spotted from Gugulesizwe Camp’s hilltop location, just 4km inland. Quite different in feel to the sultry seaside forest, ‘Gugs’ (as it’s affectionately known) is noted for the beauty of the early morning and late afternoon light shining on the surrounding sea of grass.

Situated above the superb snorkelling site at Lala Nek, Gugs provides everything for the idea family-and-friends holiday.

The open, airy location lends itself to daydreaming, while kids can burn off their excess energy in complete safety.

Enjoy the 8 en suite rooms (including one family room with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom), as well as the bar, kitchen, lounge, pool deck and boma.

When the ocean calls, a short 4×4 drive brings you to endless beach, rockpools, and all the wildlife-spotting possibilities that Maputaland offers.

At Gugs you can set your own schedule, guided only by the tides and your own wishes. This is your time, and however you choose to spend it is just fine by us.

Dining

Informed by the “Omnivores Dilemma” by Michael Pollan, we keep tight control on our supply line. We only serve food from places we have visited to attain an ethical and organic kitchen. We offer three meals a day, with menus reflecting our organic, plant-based approach to cuisine.

Activities

The beauty of Maputaland is that you can do as much here as you wish – or as little. Relax on the beach, stroll through the trees in search of brilliant butterflies and birds, or head to Lake Sibaya, the largest freshwater lake in Southern Africa.

Depending on the seasons, watch prehistoric loggerhead and leatherback turtles dig their nests in the sand, and humpback whales migrate along the coast.

For a fully immersive experience, take the plunge and enjoy some of the world’s best snorkelling with qualified, experienced instructors. The flourishing reefs are home to amazingly diverse macro life, not to mention octopus, eels and nudibranchs.

Back on dry land, spend time with our neighbours at the KwaMpukane community centre and learn more about the culture of the people and the stories and traditions that pass its’ magic on to the next generation. Or simply watch Citizen Kane at our beautiful outdoor cinema situated under the stars and next to the cicadas.

Whatever you choose to do, you can be sure of a fulfilling and enriching time.
